Puberty was unkind to me. It came in the form clan eruption of pimples on my face I had braces with headgear. and was Liege for my ate. toweling owl my pan.in possession of Wren and thick legs before my time Clothe cut for teem never looked TOIL and shopping trips to the mall more agony I spew hours looking into brightly- Ix mirrors ids the Fitting room I've seen you in worse. was my mother's way of being positive.
As a child from New Jersey who came of age in the ’90s, conformity was the name of the game, and I was always losing.I was brown in a predominantly white school. My parents spoke with accents and had a strict no-sleepover policy. But the most traumatic rite of passage came in a variety of washes and textures: Boot cut jeans. Did I grow up in a particularly tyrannical era for denim? It seems so now, with current size inflation and the generous addition of elastane in the mix. My first pair of Diesel boot cut jeans cost $100, an unthinkable amount of money fora 14-year-old to spend on a single item of clothing. For jeans? My mother couldn’t understand what all the fuss was about. I had to lie down to zip and button them, willing myself to fit into a size that wasn’t mine—wearing a 27
was acceptable,a 26 was better, but anything above that would be a crime. Boot cut jeans were supposed to fit in a certain way, sitting cleanly at the waist, lying flat against boyish hips, encasing a pair of slender legs, and ending at the floor. Black faux-leather platform boots by Steve Madden were encouraged for added height. The jeans had to be long enough, or else they were referred to as flood —you did not want to be known as the girl who wore floods. When I came downstairs in my new attire, carrying my weighty backpack, teetering in my new shoes, my mother looked aghast. She probably noticed that the jeans looked terrible—too tight, the wrong proportions, unflattering on my full hips and thighs. Or she might have seen the terror in my face.I went to school in different variations of this outfit every day and came home with marks on my skin from the waistband. On occasion, I had back pain. Still, I continued as an imposter, collecting more than 20 pairs over the years, but the truth was no clothes could corset me into something else.I was who I was denim wouldn’t change that.
