Hailed in the press as "handsomely crafted'', an "outstanding achievement" and "compellingly sinister", the series has caused more than one respectable middle-class family in England to look around its members and wonder, "What if?" 1 think it really touched a nerve: Ruth says now, "with people starting to talk about secrets and families more than they ever have. It's a very British story, after all - its about repressed people who can't communicate their emot ions, which is very British indeed! It was a huge risk for me to put my family's story out there, but the respect the story was received with was really amazing. And I think people respected me, too, just for putting myself on the line like that: In her own family, she says, the ripples of effects are still being felt..
